As children, we grow up watching movies and reading books that feature super-humans in spandex saving whole cities, princes rescuing princesses from dragons and creatures, and wizards concocting cure-all potions to resolve every worldly issue. We are conditioned to believe that our own fears and obstacles can only be removed by others’ brawn and unexplainable magic. The reality is, our personal capacity for courage reaches well beyond our wildest imaginations; the most valiant acts are not the ones that allow us to swoop in and absolve the issues of others. Rather, it is finding the strength to surrender to the moments when our intuition guides us to making a choice that we know has the potential to be rejected or judged by others that reveal our true character; our personal decisions are the most radical catalysts of positive change in our own lives. The natural human inclination is to overvalue the perceptions of others, which too often leads us either into the danger zone of making what we know is the wrong choice on a personal level or the lethal limbo of decision neutrality, or inaction. The powerful, age-old mantra, “Lions don’t concern themselves with the opinions of sheep” has become a cliché for a reason- it is true. Commit to your own conclusions knowing full well that YOU are the author of your own authentic heroic journey. Write it in a Sharpie marker; be intentional, but also give yourself the ability to boldly cross out what does not serve your story rather than erasing and making room for the same error. Live authentically from your place of power, be infinitely grateful that you have the privilege to chose your choices, and trust that even what you initially distinguish as a whisper has the potential to evolve into an omnipotent roar.
