As for the book about the Calumet region that I posted excerpts from that was of interest to so many, I did contact the library office for acquisitions downtown and received a response today. I had to laugh when I read it.. Youll see the correspondence between us below. Please explain to me why this book is NOT available in the local libraries in the Calumet region of Chicago. Calumet Beginnings: Ancient Shorelines and Settlements at the South End of Lake Michigan Hardcover – November 12, 2003 ISBN-10: 025334218X ISBN-13: 978-0253342188 I was informed that ONLY one copy of this book is available in the ENTIRE Chicago Public Library system and ONLY at the Harold Washington Branch and ONLY as a resource book. REALLY? I find that outrageous! You might try supplying copies to the branch libraries in the Calumet region of Chicago, as it provides a fascinating, detailed account of the geology, geography and history of the region that many Chicagoans have called home for generations. I certainly hope someone on staff will acquire copies for the Hegewisch, East Side and South Chicago branches ASAP. RESPONSE: Thank you for bringing this book to our attention. The new edition will be ordered for branches of the Chicago Public Library that neighbor Calumet as well as circulating copies for the central library.
