As much as I love the blues, I am no expert. Hell - Im no expert in anything! (Insert Chris Woody MacDermott writing FACT! here). And there is a possibility I may offend all you real blues fans by talking about this LP. Dont worry - Im not extending my praises to Robert Cray nor Jeff Healy. I am talking about the real deal! Muddy Waters. Yeah. You heard of him? Great. Well, in 1978, albino guitar master, Johnny Winter, produced this record called Hard Again. Muddy had signed to Winters label, Blue Sky, and they created this relatively modern masterpiece in 3 days. Mannish Boy, I Cant Be Satisfied and I Want To Be Loved are all re-recorded hits from Waterss past. You know these songs. If you dont, go back to school. The difference here with these (and the rest of this LP) is that these are even better. Maybe its sacrilegious to say that, but I am saying it. Johnny Winter knew for a FACT that Muddy still had a ton of life in him and those songs. And he really got it out of him and his band. And not only did he pull out great performances, he made sure that it was all documented correctly. Upon looking retrospectively, this may be in the top 10 coolest recordings of the 1970s. That, my friends, is saying a LOT. Do yourself a favor and listen to this gem. Unlike a lot of blues artists and their recordings that were suffering a gloss-over later in their years due to poor misguided productions, Hard Again is raw and huge the way the real electric blues was originally meant to be heard. As for now, Im goin down to Florida!
