As predicted by marine research scientists 20+ years after their initial release in Floridian waters, invasive predatorial lionfish, genetically proven to stem from less than 10 female lionfish originally released, have now become established in Brazilian waters. Originating in the Indo-Pacific, the invasion of lionfish from the northern to (now) the southern western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean, is widely acknowledged as the most extensive alien marine species invasion in recorded history. A commonly quoted analogy refers to invasive lionfish as the Norwegian Rats of the Sea; however, the enviro-socio-economic costs associated with invasive lionfish, which can decimate native fish populations, may prove to be even more extensive than their land-based counterparts. Concerted human efforts, including promising scientific work and community culling events aimed at controlling and managing exploding invasive lionfish populations, continues in many countries throughout the invaded range.
