As promised...a segment of Dead Ringers, appearing in Horror Society Stories Volume 1: Arriving at the abandoned caretaker’s office, Jennifer pulled the door open slowly. The handle was rusty and the hinges groaned from decades of corrosion. The wood was rotten, moist and smelly. She fumbled in the dark, praying she would not be found in here. There has to be another way out of this cemetery, she thought. Squinting in the darkness, she looked at the map on the wall. She traced the outline of the gate with her finger, noting that it surrounded the cemetery completely. The only way in or out was the entrance they used to get in. They were trapped in here. Thanks for building more than one option to get the hell out of here, dammit. She sighed and opened the desk drawer, hoping for a gun but coming up empty. Any gun would be too old to fire, anyway. Not that it would do any good against something already dead. Her fingers brushed against something metal. She withdrew her hand from the drawer, staring at the rusty key in her hand. She inspected it for a moment before she realized what it was. The key to the front gate! Her nostrils flared as the scent of death filled her nasal cavity. She sniffed a few times. No doubt about it, she smelled rotting flesh. The dead were just outside! She slid under the desk to hide, hearing the rustling grass outside. She could hear the footsteps growing louder. She chewed on her lip, her heart pounding in her ears. Sweat covered her skin and drenched her hair. She gasped as the creak of the hinges announced the entrance of the dead. She slid further beneath the desk, pulling her legs close to her body. Her hand gripped the key tightly, their only way out of this horror. The reek became overpowering as the dead shuffled inside the small building. Choking down the rising bile in her throat, she fought back the urge to vomit. A pair of feet shuffled in front of her. She closed her eyes tight and fought back a whimper building in her chest. When she opened her eyes again, she was disgusted by the worms falling from the walking corpse. Jennifer screamed as a hand grasped her ankle, pulling her out from under the desk. They had found her! A corpse drew her from under the desk, hauling her toward the door where the other’s awaited. Her arms flailing, she was dragged from the structure by the dead. Her screams pierced the still night air, having no effect on her assailants. The key slipped from her grasp, lying useless in the grass.
