As promised, here is the story of Suni and Kasea. To begin with, - TopicsExpress

As promised, here is the story of Suni and Kasea. To begin with, the TL;DR version: They’re here, they’re safe and if even part of their background as related to me is accurate, their owners have my heartfelt respect and gratitude for what they’ve done for these two. Now, for those of you who have the time and patience, the full story… Our story begins a few weeks ago, when I was contacted in my capacity as the owner of The Dachshund Rescue Web Page. An individual was concerned because he had created an account to list his animals as needing a new home, but he couldn’t log into the website. After explaining how the site works and which spam filter his account had triggered, he asked me “By chance are you the Benny I did some business with that ran the Dachshund Rescue in Jacksonville FL about 13 years ago? I picked up my little girl from there.” I had no way to be certain, as all of the records from the time I was active in rescue & placement have long since been archived, but based on my knowledge of the Jacksonville rescue community at that time, it was likely that he had adopted from me. I reminded him that if, in fact, he had adopted from me, part of the adoption agreement he would have signed was that if he could no longer care for the animal, he would return it to my care. I also pointed out the blunt reality that because both were seniors, the likelihood of finding a home for one, much less the pair he had, was slim, at best. I explained how I was now “senior sanctuary” and told him that because of the adoption agreement, I did expect that he would return Suni to my care. I also told him that if Kasea also made it to my front door, I would provide sanctuary for him, as well. The story I was given was that he and his wife would be moving into a nursing home shortly and he later told me that, while the community allowed pets, they also required an additional $600 per month pet fee. Since he had said earlier that he had been forced to discontinue an expensive medication for Suni because of the cost (a bit over $100 a month for that), I could very much understand how $600 a month could be a bank breaker for a person of average income, especially knowing how much nursing facilities cost each month. Despite the distance from Atlanta, where they now lived, the chance to keep their little ones together and safe, rather than risking a shelter or rescue where they might be separated, was a straw they felt was worth grasping for. After trying (unsuccessfully) to find help in getting their beloved animals to my front door, they finally made the decision to risk the drive themselves. They felt that strongly about keeping their babies safe and together. On meeting them, I felt badly that they hadn’t been able to find help among their friends in getting the pups here, but was humbled by what they had put themselves through in order to do so. And so, Suni and Kasea are here and will remain here for the balance of their lives. As I write this, both are cuddled together in the only familiar place remaining to them - the crate that they use as their bedroom. ~Senior Wiener
