As some parts of our country celebrate Jamhuri Day and others - TopicsExpress

As some parts of our country celebrate Jamhuri Day and others cower in fear from bandits, thugs and terrorists, just my personal thoughts. After all today is a day to reflect on where we are as a country. Our authorities have a very 1960s take on improving our security. As threats evolve, the response to it should as well. This idea of flooding an area with hundreds of police or military with guns after the event and saying security has been beefed up does not help. We need to fight emerging threats through better use of intelligence and technology. For example, having each and every corner of Nairobis CBD covered by CCTV and only having small, but highly trained, highly mobile and well equipped rapid response teams positioned strategically will be more effective (and cheaper!) than having mobs of intimidating, armed, uniformed chaps harrassing people whose only mistake is leaving work late or having a drink after said work. I believe that similar effective, workable and cost effective solutions can be found for other security issues. Ni hayo tu.
