As someone who is lighter skin, I did understand I was on the privilege side of Colorism. But I also did grow up around people darker than me (and lighter than me) saying the darker the berry the sweeter the juice a lot. I understand the deeper psychological and sociological places that comes from, but it probably doesnt need any more justification than Black is Beautiful. The struggles between shades arent equal, and thats a fact. I would be condescending enough to suggest that it is. But sometimes I think when a lighter skin person mentions how that saying affected them, and darker skin people rebut it with but we suffer more type reactions, its understandably defensive, but still dismissive. The history of Colorism that came out of slavery has affected darker skin people more. But lets be cognizant of the fact the historical forces that made some Black people lighter skinned. Chances are that if you a descendent of a slave and arent as black as night, somewhere in the past a white man raped (through coercion or force) your ancestor. Its like if I tell a woman my struggles as a man or vice versa. We can but men do.... / but women do... back and forth and solve nothing. Sometimes I think its better to just listen and understand, and not well my situation is worst it away. Now if a light-skin person tells you that their struggles are worst, oh yes, you need to let they ass have it. But if they are simply opening up to you to tell you they struggle with skin color too, they arent trying to diminish your experience.
