As someone whose father was born in Gaza, and appreciates the fact that it was due to pure luck and chance that he got out, I am against the use of unwarranted, useless and largely symbolic violence against ANYONE. As demonstrated by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system, there is absolutely no need for the air and ground operations over Gaza. ‘Operation Protective Edge’ is NOT defensive, and its only two purposes are to reinforce Israel’s illegal gas interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and to flex its muscles to its increasingly conservative constituents. Both of these motives, abhorrent as they are, are not unique- they are a feature of any nation with colonial ambitions. What is unique is the blanket support Israel receives from most of the international community, and the one sidedness of the way this ‘conflict’ is portrayed by the media, as Gaza’s civilians are once again pummelled by the region’s only nuclear power.
