As war rages past its third year in Syria, President Assad announced his intent to run for re-election last week. Since the start of the Syrian uprising over three years ago, the Assad regime has killed more than 100,000 Syrians and displaced 6.5 million of its own people. 2.6 million Syrians have fled the country in search of refuge, with the United Nations Refugee Agency expecting this number to surpass 4 million by the end of the year.
