As we approach the commencement of Muharram 1st in the 1436 calendar, a lot of messages are flying around regarding certain prayer formula and fasting meant to usher in the new year. We first have to remember that it was reported by Jabir that RosuluLLAH(SAW)used to start his sermon saying: the best word is the book of Allah & the best way is that of Muhammad(saww). The worst of deeds are innovations (in religious matters)& every innovation is a deviation and every innovation leads to hell(Muslim). There are only two Eids that should be celebrated in Islam: Eid ul Adha & Eid ul Fitri. There is no record in any of the authentic ahadith that RosuluLLAH(SAW) or the sahabas made any special prayers or congregation or fasting specifically to celebrate Muharram.. This, as well as others like the mawlud are just purely innovations imitating the people ofThe e book (Jews and Christians)! The recognised sunnah is the fasting of Ashura(10th of Muharram. The Prophet(saww) further advised us ti fast on the 9th &10th of Muharram so as to differ from the practice of the Jews! Ironically, we want to embrace them in all deviations! May Allah save us from this (Aamiin). Let us remind ourselves with a beautiful hadith narrated by Irbad Ibn Saariyah that RosuluLLAH(SAW) said: Whoever survives me would witness many differences. So hold to my sunnah & those of my rightly guided Caliphs. Adhere to it firmly and avoid every innovations
