As we move into the warmer weather the sound of cicadas on our Scottsdale Reserve in NSW has become a constant, deafening noise. Commonly known as the redeye (a Psaltoda species), this native cicada is found all through south east Australia. Their song consists of a continuous rumbling phase & several yodelling (varying pitch) phases. On of our ecologists filmed this one wandering up a trunk before pausing to contribute to the chorus!
