As we walk upon 20 years of democracy we celebrate the 58th anniversary that women took a stand and said equal rights for all. The Bill of rights introduction was the advent that recognized the rights of women. Nowadays women, especially black women still represent a disproportionate section of the unemployed. South African women also have to contend with high levels of rape and domestic violence. In the Northern Cape the Mme re ka thusa womens development trust was established with the main aim of alleviating poverty, with the trust now fully operational and 12.7 million rand having been set aside for womens empowerment over the next three years only a good story can be told. Since 2012 women in construction, transport and logistics have been key priority areas, and awards in these sectors have been to celebrate women making great strides in these fields. When remarkable women such as Mme Helen Joseph and Mme Bertha Mashaba lead the march to the Union Buildings on a quest to prohibit women having to carry dom passes a journalist (last name Walker) characterized the sight as throughout the demonstration the huge crowd displayed a discipline and dignity that was deeply impressive. Young women of today would be greatly aided in imitating that same dignity and discipline. Dora Tamana a stalwart of the ANC Womens League once said: This is something that touches my heart, I appeal to young Africans to come and fight. Let us always remember that even a passive resistance is still an act of defiance and revolution. MALIBONGWE HAPPY WOMENS DAY!!!
