Assemblymember Pérez to Honor Nachhattar Chandi as 56th Assembly District’s 2013 Small Business of the Year the CA Small Business Day this Monday in Sacramento This Monday, June 10, Riverside and Imperial County’s Chandi Group USA will be honored by Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez as the 56th Assembly District’s “2013 Small Business of the Year.” Mr. Nachhattar Chandi and family will be traveling to Sacramento to participate in the recognition event held at the Sacramento Convention Center and sponsored by the California Small Business Association. “Mr. Chandi and his wife Susana are stellar examples of hardworking immigrants achieving the American Dream --- while also contributing to business development, job creation, and the wellbeing of Riverside and Imperial County residents,” said Pérez. “It’s my privilege to honor him at this year’s recognition event.” Mr. Chandi immigrated to California from India more than two decades ago. After marrying his wife Susana, an immigrant from Mexico, they chose the Coachella Valley as their home. Together, the Chandis worked long days to establish their first business, a gas station in the city of Coachella. Over time, Mr. Chandi grew his business, opening others in the Coachella Valley. He eventually built the Mecca Travel Center on Hwy 86, helping to revamp the workflow of the eastern Coachella Valley and becoming the town of Mecca’s largest employer. After 22 years of business, the Chandi Group now consists of numerous businesses. Mr. Chandi’s latest investment is a 90-acre mixed-used project, Northgate Corner in Indio. “It’s an honor to be recognized as the Business Person of the Year,” said Mr. Chandi. “Looking back since we first began in Coachella, I would have never imagined the success that my company has reached. This award is a tribute to the hours of hard work and dedication we put in as a family, with our staff and the local employees we hire, who make sure we stay open whether it’s am or pm. It’s really special because small businesses are the people who contribute most collectively to the cities where we live and work. I’m happy to be a part of that community.”
