Assemblymember Richard Blooms long-overdue legislation, AB 2140, - TopicsExpress

Assemblymember Richard Blooms long-overdue legislation, AB 2140, will likely be assigned to the 15-member ASSEMBLY WATER, PARKS & WILDLIFE COMMITTEE for an April hearing. The chair of the committee is Assemblymember Anthony Rendon. Other members are Frank Bigelow, Travis Allen, Raul Bocanegra, Brian Dahle, Paul Fong, Jim Frazier, Beth Gaines, Mike Gatto, Jimmy Gomez, Lorena Gonzalez, Adam Gray, Jim Patterson, Freddie Rodriguez and Mariko Yamado. SeaWorld is to be commended for its efforts on behalf of marine animals over these many years, but its time for the orca and dolphin shows to go. Cetaceans do NOT thrive in captivity, nor do they belong there. And certainly not for mere entertainment purposes. HOW YOU CAN HELP: Send your letters in support of AB 2140 to the Assemblymembers above. ALL LEGISLATORS MAY BE WRITTEN C/O THE STATE CAPITOL, SACRAMENTO, CA 95814. If youre a member of an environmental organization, urge them to actively support AB 2140: SIERRA CLUB, EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE, SEA SHEPHERD, GREENPEACE, AUDUBON SOCIETY, NATURE CONSERVANCY, LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS, DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE, MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM, SHEDD AQUARIUM, et al. Lets not allow unfounded worries of job loss and tourist revenues trump the REAL issues: animal welfare, ethics and morality. The orcas, dolphins and belugas deserve far better. As do we. x Eric Mills, coordinator ACTION FOR ANIMALS Oakland P.S. - RECOMMENDED READING: Elizabeth Kolberts new book, THE SIXTH EXTINCTION.
