At a recent gathering of friends, I was appalled to see that six of the seven children (aged between 6 and 12 yrs) accompanying their mothers had been given iPads to “keep them occupied”. The seventh child, whose parents had not been “generous” enough to provide him with an iPad, has not stopped complaining since! When asked, the parents responded that they have to do this in order to have a little peace and quiet. Given that the vast majority of children using iPads are using them for games or Internet surfing (my friend’s eight-year-old in the US managed to order several things from Amazon, when he found his father’s account open after she had forgotten to sign out), and *not* for reading, I can’t help thinking that if more people just took a little time to inculcate a love of books in their children - as a number of my friends have - it might ensure them all the peace and quiet they could possibly desire... :-D
