At the Senior assembly on Nehemiahs final day of school, the - TopicsExpress

At the Senior assembly on Nehemiahs final day of school, the principal told all the students they would receive a phone call or letter in 6 months asking if they were enrolled in college and whether or not they are enrolled, effects the schools funding. While I did know this already since I have a lot of teacher friends, it still bothers me that funding is dependent upon how many kids further their education. And 6 months down the road is not long to gauge whether someone will be successful or not. Lots of people attend college the first semester and drop out after. Some get a full degree and are never successful in life. And some never go to college but start major corporations on intuition and good management and accounting skills. And of course, many women choose not to go to college because they plan to stay home with their children and be a home maker. Schools should be funded for doing a great job at providing an excellent high school education. They should provide college classes and higher educational classes for those that plan to attend college, but not everyone is even college material. There is nothing wrong with that. It would save us a lot of tax dollars if those that WANT to pursue an education in college and WANT to work hard to get a degree would go and those that dont wouldnt be told all through high school that without a degree you will be a failure in life-in essence setting them up to fail. Too many young people drop out of college as it is. Why start if you dont have the drive to finish? Study after study of the most successful people in the world have shown that success is dependent upon character. Some people lack drive and while they may get a college degree-they are never driven to make a huge success of their lives while others who never attended or graduate from college go on to be hugely successful. Rachel Ray-never went to college John D Rockefeller-dropped out of high school Simon Cowell-dropped out of High School Michael J Fox-dropped out of high school Sean Connery-dropped out of high school Amancio Ortega Gaona (richest man in Spain)-dropped out of high school Walt Disney-dropped out of high school but took some art classes Dave Thomas-owner of Wendys dropped out of high school Peter Arnell- advertizing executive-never attended college I am certainly not an advocate for dropping out of high school, but I AM saying that success is not dependent upon education alone and honestly education is only a small part of what makes a person successful or not. Intelligence, communications skills, persistence, thick skin, empathy for and relating to others, and business sense are the determining factors of success in most cases-with or without a degree. Some of those skills are learned in High School and college and some are not. Most are learned at home. There are lots of fields that require a degree-I get that. I wouldnt want a doctor operating on me without a medical degree, but most people are going into fields that can be obtained with or with out a degree depending on their determination to rise to the top. If anything-I think that phone call should come 10 years after high school. By 10 years, you can better gauge whether a high school education paid off and drove the person to success. 6 months.....not even worth messing with IMHO.
