SOMETIMES! The word ‘sometimes’ in not used in the Old Testament at all and only three times in the New Testament. In Eph. 2:13 we are told SOMETIME FAR OFF “ But now ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.” Made in His image and made to enjoy the closest possible fellowship with the Almighty, somehow a gap was created. Down through the corridors of time there were a few who closed that gap. Those who made this choice were few and far between. It was not a constant nor was it consistent. IT WAS SOMETIMES! Not everyone did it out of rebellion or disobedience -- some did it out of ignorance. A few felt the wooing of God’s Holy Spirit and lived exceptional lives endeavoring to close the gap but the vast majority wandered and wavered and only occasionally stepped up to the point where they could see the perfect plan of God for their lives. Former president Ronald Reagan once had an aunt who took him to a cobbler for a pair of new shoes. The cobbler asked young Reagan, Do you want square toes or round toes? Unable to decide, Reagan didnt answer, so the cobbler gave him a few days. Several days later the cobbler saw Reagan on the street and asked him again what kind of toes he wanted on his shoes. Reagan still couldnt decide, so the shoemaker replied, Well, come by in a couple of days. Your shoes will be ready. When the future president did so, he found one square-toed and one round-toed shoe! This will teach you to never let people make decisions for you, the cobbler said to his indecisive customer. I learned right then and there, Reagan said later, if you dont make your own decisions, someone else will make them for you. Perfection was the original state of man. It was God’s plan and it never changed. You have heard of people who presumably pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps. It speaks of one who through their own effort accomplished and achieved great things. But greatness is not manipulation -- it is a miracle. It is defined by getting back to where we began. SQUARE ONE! Like Adam it is a walk in the cool of the evening with their maker. Someone once wrote and asked Emily Post, the etiquette expert of another generation, What is the correct procedure when one is invited to the White House but has a previous engagement? Replied Post, An invitation to dine at the White House is a command, and it automatically cancels any other engagement. Having priorities indicates the possibility of a change. It is full steam ahead and there is no place for pause. Man created grand treason and if repair was possible it would have to be comprised of something far greater than the conventional methods of man. There couldn’t be two ways. That would be confusion and God is not the author of confusion. There couldn’t be a greater or more costly plan that could be deferred to in the event the first attempt failed. ‘Sometimes’ had to be forever forsaken. God’s desire would be fulfilled but the blood of his son would have to be spilled. Our sins were forgiven, forgotten, forever.
