At this time of year when exams loom, pupils and parents stress and anxiety build across the country. Whilst I do have an issue with the pressure placed upon individuals, I see no problem with hard work within the reasonable parameters of growing up and permitting kids to be kids. Researchers have been looking at mindfulness as a technique for adolescents in pain, and with good effect. This is a strategy that I teach most patients and especially those suffering the effects of persisting stress. It is a way of developing clarity of thought and focus, both skills necessary for effective work. This is why mindfulness is being used across the board now, in sport, business and healthcare. Typically we operate on the so-called autopilot, meaning that we go about our business without much awareness of what is happening in that moment. Mindfulness keeps us in the present and hence sculpts our ability to focus. Changing the brains electrochemical activity will ultimately change the persons reality. Mindfulness appears to do just that, altering the default mode network that could correspond with the wandering mind. Being observant of the minds activities and curious about our thoughts, rather than becoming embroiled and living out the past or creating a future, reduces the chance that stress responses will be triggered. jpepsy.oxfordjournals.org/content/39/5/521 Contact us for your first session: 07932 689081
