The number of doctors, lawyers, engineers, MBAs, computer engineers etc. entering the job market is about 30-40 times higher than what it used to be like just about 20 years ago. But the number of jobs is not expanding at the same rate. Large scale computerization of operational and maintenance system in every sector of the economy, switching over to turn key technology in the industrial sector, out sourcing of work to contracting firms specializing in this or that kind of activity,remote controlled monitoring because of enhanced communication facilities etc have all, individually and collectively, brought down the need for additional manpower. Indias hope lies in creation of new jobs in the manufacturing sectors since the service sectors are quantitatively saturated, even if remaining, to a large extent, qualitatively deficient. Once the manufacturing sector gains momentum, everything else is bound to improve through a cascading impact. However, for the job seekers their is a catch. Indian manufacturing is, by and large, neither cost efficient nor does it stand up, qualitatively, to be any where near the best prevailing international standards. The manufacturing sector, as and when it is revived, will work on Lean Six Sigma techniques. This would require considerable man management skills and a high degree of motivation fro the work force.
