Atiu in the Cook Islands was originally named Enuamanu - island of the birds - but invasive species threatened some of its bird species such as the spectacularly rainbowed Rimatara Lorikeet and the delicate Rarotonga flycatcher. With support from CEPF through its investment in the Polynesia-Micronesia biodiversity hotspot, the Cook Islands Natural Heritage Trust worked to maintain the pristine state of Atiu Island. This included raising the consciousness at all levels of society about the threats of invasive species combined with restoration activities and ecotourism development.
