Attention Bergen County Voters: Hackensack Riverkeeper hopes - TopicsExpress

Attention Bergen County Voters: Hackensack Riverkeeper hopes you will support Blue Acres on Tuesday, November 5th 2013 County of Bergen Ballot Question The County approved a ballot question that will ask voters on November 5, 2013 to consider amending the Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland & Historic Preservation Trust Fund to include a new eligible land preservation category known as “Blue Acres” projects. If approved by Bergen County voters, Trust Fund grant funding will be made available to purchase flood-prone residential properties with the goal of removing structures and restoring and/or conserving the functions of the natural floodplain. The Trust Fund Program will continue to provide the same grants to municipalities, nonprofits, and the County since the Trust Fund Program was established in 1999. Adding the acquisition of “Blue Acres” projects will be the only change. The Trust Fund authorized levy will not change. New Jersey has a long history of flooding in the State with Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 causing millions of dollars in storm damages. The long-term benefits of acquiring repetitively flooded properties will be the removal of people out of harm’s way from flooding events, improved life safety for first responders, and creating new open space parkland. To learn more about the Ballot Question, please review the following public information documents or contact the Division of Open Space. co.bergen.nj.us/Index.aspx?NID=1033
