Attention all entrepreneurs! A new contest is coming to Nelsonville starting on October 1. It is called Start It Up Nelsonville and awards a $10,000 business grant to a new start up or a business looking to expand within the city limits. The contest will have its own FB and social media sites. More details for Start It Up Nelsonville: Start It Up Nelsonville is a unique Business Plan and Storytelling Competition for entrepreneurs in Nelsonville, Ohio with cash prizes totaling over $15,000. The purpose of the competition is to foster business in Nelsonville, Ohio, and to increase foot traffic on the Public Square. Additionally, the contest is meant to provide a catalyst for job creation, and increased tax revenue for the community. Start It Up Nelsonville consists of two separate competitions: New Business or Business Expansion Category The Business Plan competition where new businesses or existing businesses looking to expand are offered the opportunity to pitch their ideas in a business plan format to a panel of judges comprised of executives from local businesses, and experts on small business in Athens County. Entrants will be asked to fill out a business plan and prove the viability of their concept in the Nelsonville community through a video submission. Judges will score all entrants based on a set of uniform criteria utilizing a point system. The entrants with the three highest points will then be invited to pitch their ideas in person, in front of the same panel of judges. A combination of performance and overall points will be used to determine a grand prize winner. The grand prize winner will receive $10,000 to be used toward creating or expanding their business in Nelsonville. All money must be used before the end of 2016 Calendar year and must be used locally towards the business. An outline of how this money will be spent should be included in both the business plan and the pitch (if applicable). The Grand prize winner will also receive any monies gained from crowd funding, year-long entrance into the Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce, year- long marketing and ecommerce support, and one free course from TriCounty Career Center. Roots and Wings Storytelling Category The Storytelling portion of the competition provides a unique opportunity for young and talented Nelsonville students to express their views of the Nelsonville community. The purpose of this contest is to provide a marketing opportunity for Nelsonville as a whole. Students will in grades 10-12 will be given the opportunity to respond to a series of essay questions. These essays will be graded by a panel of judges utilizing a point system. The top three performers will be awarded $500 each and will be invited to turn their essay into a video and social media campaign. Engagement in these campaigns will be measured and will be part of the overall scoring for this competition. 60% of the competition will be decided based on a point series in response to the essay competition, 40% based on social media engagement. The grand prize winner(s) will receive $3,000. Crowd funding opportunities will also be made available to the winning entrants for this competition.
