August 29, 2013 Hi! We did it! We completed the first week of second grade! I want to welcome you and your child to what I am sure is going to be a great school year! I am eager to work as “teacher and parent” team to help make your child’s overall learning experience a positive and challenging one. To help build on your child’s education, we need a ‘helping hand’ from home- that special hand belongs to you! So in order to that, you as parents need to know what is going on in our classroom. I will be using a biweekly letter and Facebook as a tool to keep you informed. So far in reading we have been working on what good readers do to stay focused and we have practiced building our reading stamina. As a class, we have also worked on how ‘do we know if a book is just right for us’. We use the sticky hand rule. If we get stuck on just one or two words on a page, the book may be easy for us. If we get stuck on three or four words on a page, then the book is just right. However, if we get stuck on five or more words on a page, the book is too hard for as at this point. In Social Studies, the students talked about how laws keep our community safe. Ask us to tell you a law and why it is a law. In math, the second graders will be working on number sense, tens & ones, and the hundred chart.
