Austin N Amber Enos-Henry posted: As I read these posts I have realized that there are a lot of new surgical technologists that are always trying to better themselves and that it wonderful. Therefore to help accomplish this feat I have compiled a list of things that I wish someone would have shared with me when I started my career as a rookie surgical technologist. So here is a list of things that will help you keep from looking like a newbie. #1 - The node of calot is not a universe from Star Trek. #2 - If someone asks you to grab an Otis elevator, it is not found in sterile processing. #3 - When a doctor asks you how long you have been scrubbing the correct answer is not Since 7:30 this morning. #4 - Your co-workers dont need to know that youre young enough to be their child. #5 -If you are in a case and have no idea whats going on, chances are the doctor doesnt either. No need to make this obvious by asking a bunch of questions because nothing good will come of it. #6 - A doctors jokes are always funny!! So learn to laugh at all of them. #7 - Your family does not care about that perirectal abcess that you helped remove earlier that day. It will just make you seem like a glorified pimple popper. #8 - Take pride and be excited about your profession but be humble. Even the most experienced CSTs have weaknesses. No one will respect you as a serious CST if you think that you are specialized in all the specialties. #9 - You will never be able to please every doctor so dont take it personally if there are a few doctors who dont like working with you. #10 - A doctor only cares about their own surgical technique. They dont care that another doctor does the same procedure a whole other different way. So when you hand them an allis instead of the tonsil instrument they are used to dont say, Well thats how the other doctors do it. #11 - Lastly but certainly not least, Always remember that you are a professional that specializes and should excel at the healing of the human body. There is no greater calling and no better feeling than knowing that you have the skill set to save someones life. Therefore, never stop learning and always strive to be as knowledgeable about the case as the doctor themselves. You never know, maybe one day a doctor will turn to you and ask your opinion on a case. Austin R. Henry, CST
