Author’s notes #6, October 10, 2012: Humans are at the top of the food chain. How? Genetically speaking, man differs from primates by one percent. Yet they’re no match for us. With only a ONE percent difference. Not to mention we aren’t nearly as ferocious as a lion or as swift as a cheetah or as strong as a bear. With all of this taken into account, what is it that sets us above and beyond the beasts of the earth? Our intellect. While we may not be as brutish as the king of the jungle, we can outsmart him; while we may not possess the agility of a cheetah, we can use our minds to model vehicles that can surpass their speed; while our limbs may not be as powerful a grizzly’s, we can invent weaponry and armor that will protect us against their claws, teeth and relentless fiery. Intellect is our gift. We don’t have fur because we’re smart enough to use the skin of other animals to keep us warm; we don’t have claws that can impale skin because we can use stones and metals to make knives. Many ask the question, “Why can’t man fly like birds?” The answer is simple: because we see no need to. We can build birds made of metal to take us wherever we so please. The ability to fly may be a convenient addition, but the absence of it won’t cause us to go extinct. We face no immediate danger as a species by not flying. We have intellect, and what we don’t have naturally, we will find a way to create. As such, a man who displays certain mannerisms of an animal is views as mentally disturbed. They’re beneath him. Which may cause one to wonder, what would man do without his gifted mind? If left to fend for himself in the wilderness without his greatest physical asset, what are the chances of his survival? How would he fare against other animals in the wild? Thytrizamine will soon reveal the answers. It has enhanced the mind and mind but has subsequently destroyed both. The media has reported that beasts who were once men roam the concrete jungle that is New York. A powerful jolt was delivered to their brains, and at first glance, the results were positive. Shortly thereafter, their mental fuse was blown. The effects have already spread to Baltimore. From my apartment window, I can see a middle-aged man feeding on the entrails of a young woman. I can smell her decomposing body from here. My ears fill with the sound of screams. An orchestra of different voices in a bittersweet symphony of death. Men, women and children alike. A beg for mercy here, a yelp of pain there, praying to the deity of their choice to be spared from the catastrophe that has shaken their world. The streets are littered with human remains and are stained with the crimson of blood. But where I once saw chaos, I see life. Survival. That’s when our inherent selfishness becomes useful. Had that man considered the life of that woman whose intestines he now dines on, he may have starved. Or worse… been eaten himself. Those are the rules of the wild, right? Eat or be eaten? I’m curious as to how long it took to deteriorate their minds. A day? A week? Did it vary from person to person? Before long, will I too tear the flesh from another man’s body with my teeth? No. It’s become obvious that I am more advanced than these beasts. I’ve tried Sky High, but when my ascension was over and I touched the ground, the lava did not burn me. No one on my level of intellect exists in this town. I must move to join others, beings who have advanced. How slowly the uninfected run. Pitiful. Before Thytrizamine, I was like them. But now… I’m one percent higher.
