BABY GIRL I have been graced with a beautiful baby girl… She’s 3 years old; weighs 8 pounds, and has 26 toes…and I love her. Baby girl is my calico Hemmingway cat; a gift to me from my sister. I had moved back to my home state after the passing of my wife; and was a grief-stricken mess. I couldn’t stay in the house we had shared for so many years; everywhere I looked in that house, I saw her. So, I made the move and tried to pick up the pieces of my shattered life. I had declined the support groups and counseling; believing that I would be fine, eventually. It has been a 2 year struggle, and progress has been miniscule at best. Many nights my loss overwhelmed me; and if not for my Baby girl watching over me, I don’t believe I would’ve made it. Pets are so much more, than just pets… Hemmingway’s are polydactyl… Meaning, they have more toes than the average housecat. Ernest Hemmingway; for whom the breed is named after, loved their sweet natures and dispositions. There were many, many nights; that I was overcome with emotion…and Baby girl watched over me. She would sit on the arm of my chair or in my lap; and just stare at me, the crying fool. It was unsettling; but then she would place a paw on my arm or my chest, as if comforting me… There, there… It’s okay… I’m here… Everything’s gonna be alright… I owe my sanity to my sweet little girl. For some reason, Baby girl doesn’t like it when I write. When I’m on my laptop; she aggravates the brownies out of me, like she’s doing now. Maybe she’s trying to tell me something about my writing… Look at him… Bless his heart… Put it down, before you hurt yourself… Poor thing; don’t know what he’s doing… Or maybe it’s Ernest; using his minion to send me the message… BUD ALLEN
