Kidney stones are small, crystalline masses that develop in kidneys and travel out via urethra. Passing kidney stones can be painful. Some pass without intervention, others require medical treatment. Kidney stone is hard, crystalline mineral formed within kidney or urinary tract. Symptoms include flank pain and blood in urine . Stones form when there is decrease in urine volume and/or excess stone forming substances in urine. Dehydration is major factor for kidney stone formation. People with medical conditions, such as gout, and those who take medications or supplements are at risk for kidney stones. Dietary and hereditary factors are also related to stone formation. Diagnosis of kidney stones is accomplished using CT scan. Most kidney stones will pass through ureter to bladder on their own. Treatment includes pain control medications and, in some cases, medications to facilitate passage of urine. If needed surgical techniques may be used for stones which do not pass on their own.
