BANKING AWARENESS: 12-9-2013 Lead Bank Scheme: Lead Bank Scheme (LBS) was introduced in 1969. =>A bank having relatively large network of branches in rural areas of a given district and with adequate financial and manpower resources has generally been entrusted with the lead responsibility for that district. =>The lead bank acts as a leader for coordinating the efforts of all credit institutions in the allotted districts to increase the flow of credit to agriculture, SSI and other economic activities in the rural and semi-urban areas. =>Recently RBI extended Lead Bank Scheme to metropolitan areas also for financial inclusion. =>RBI announced that Bank of India will be the lead bank for Mumbai, Indian Overseas Bank will be the lead bank for Chennai, while SBI will handle that responsibility for Kolkata and State Bank of Hyderabad for Hyderabad. For Delhi, the responsibility will be shared by SBI, Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Canara Bank.
