BE HARDY: The actor, Jack OConnell who plays Louie Zamperini in the Angelina Jolie directed movie Unbroken recounts his meeting with the character he plays and the advice Zamperini gave to him: Be Hardy. It is an admonition which hardly gets any airtime today. When was it in recent times one heard, Be Hardy as the motto of a life? And yet what a great two sentence advice it is for anyone: Be Hardy. I can hardly find anything to fault about it. The word Hardy is an adjective, commonly defined as being able to withstand difficult or adverse conditions, robust, courageous, intrepid. Knowing its definition, we can all stand to be hardy or a little hardier. Our generation complains too much. We expect too much. We have bought into this idea that life should be easy, settled, when generations before us knew what we refuse to see, that life - being life - is difficult. People before us have soldiered on through wars, pestilence, disease and uncertainty, and have maintained a wonderful sense of stiff upper lip grace about it. Us? Halfway around the world people die from Ebola and we jettison our common sense here in America in panic until we are gripped by the next wave of panic - the economy, the natural disasters, the stock market. And so I think I know what my New Years resolution shall be: Be hardy. I shall try to be hardy.
