BEATING: Many of us in The Bahamas grew up receiving regular beatings for all manner of childhood infractions. Many of those stories involve being beaten with switches, belts, shoes, wires, pipes and basically what ever our parents could put their hands on first. While corporal punishment may not be unique to The Bahamas it is interesting to learn that we share a particular INTENSITY & FREQUENCY of our BEATINGS with many of the Caribbean countries and Southern States in America. No doubt we BEAT because our parents BEAT us and their parents BEAT them and so on and so on... But where was this behavior learnt that we so quickly resort to physical pain as a consequence for misbehavior or using it as a tool to achieve conformity??? Is it possible that our forefathers in slavery eventually started to emulate the cruel methods used by their SLAVE MASTERS - to break their spirits and use an example so that all other slaves quickly conformed or faced savage BEATINGS by what ever was available - on thier own black children? In other words are we simply perpetuating the EXACT cruel and inhumane methods used by Slave Masters on our forefathers as a form of disciplining our own children???
