BEFORE YOU MAKE THAT CALL… A weekly tutorial from Hach Technology Solutions, LLC “My computer is soooo slow! I don’t know what happened. Can you fix it?” I’ve heard this complaint for as many years as I have been in business. In fact, I do house calls for this issue more than any other. Yet, before you make that call to your repair man, there are a few things you can do even if you do not know much about computers. Let me help you. Most likely the reason for your slow computer is that there are things on it that are unnecessary and you are not aware of. For your computer to run faster, these need to be removed. So, all you need to do is follow a few steps slowly and deliberately. This can be done safely and without too much anxiety. First, click on the window button at the bottom left of your screen. This is the large round blue circle the farthest left of the icons at the very bottom. You will then see a list and one of the features is “Control Panel.” Click on this. Don’t be alarmed when you see all of the icons that suddenly appear. Look for “Programs and Features” and click on that. Now the investigation begins. You want to get rid of all tool bars that you see, such as “task tool bar.” These came along as “hidden guests” with things that you downloaded and are now slowing everything down. Just single click on the tool bar and click on the word “Uninstall” found at the top of the page. The unwanted items will now magically disappear. However, if you are unsure what a program is, DON’T delete it. Next, you want to do is get rid of your PC “optimizers.” These do not include ones you paid for or that you did specifically downloaded. These are free ones that may have just shown up. You would also find them on this page. The third things to look for are multiple anti-viruses, for they will fight each other. You only need to have one. If you have Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials is very good. If you have Windows 8, Windows Defender is the built in anti-virus. If you have Windows XP, AVG the free edition works fine. Update your antivirus and then run a thorough scan. Last, find Malware Bytes (malwarebytes.org), and download the free edition. Then, update and scan, quarantining whatever it finds. If your PC is still running slowly, now is the time to call or email your trustworthy computer man. I (lee@hachtechnologysolutions) am happy to give advice before you continue. No computer question is too big or too small. Easy, peasy? Not really, but once you go through these steps a few times, you will no longer be intimidated by your computer. While it can be an annoying piece of modern technology, it does not have to be mysterious!
