BEIRUT: A powerful cousin of Syrian President Bashar Assad has relocated to Belorussia with his wife, according to multiple sources. They said that Hafez Makhlouf, Assad’s maternal cousin, had left the country amid speculation the move came after his falling-out with the president’s inner circle. Earlier this month, Makhlouf was removed from his powerful intelligence post in Damascus but pro-regime sources said at the time that it was a “routine” move, linked to his promotion from colonel to general.
