(AP Photo/Gene Puskar) Aware of the attack on the World Trade Center that had already taken place, the passengers on the plane attempted to enter the cockpit and take control of the aircraft back from the hijackers. The hijackers then crashed the plane into a field near Shanksville. The Flight 93 Memorial honors the 40 crew members and non-terrorist passengers who died on that flight, and recalls the sense of national unity Americans felt in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. There are reports that the entrance gates to the memorial have been locked since the shutdown began on October 1. WPXI-TV of Pittsburgh, Penn. reported that visitors were crossing the closed gates as early as October 2, only to be stopped from walking to the memorial by park police.
