BENEATH CONTEMPT: Feds Blocking Road to Open-Air Flight 93 Memorial United Flight 93 was scheduled to fly from Newark to San Francisco on Sept. 11, 2001. It was hijacked by four al Qaeda terrorists, who turned it around and started flying it toward Washington, D.C. (AP Photo/Gene Puskar) Aware of the attack on the World Trade Center that had already taken place, the passengers on the plane attempted to enter the cockpit and take control of the aircraft back from the hijackers. The hijackers then crashed the plane into a field near Shanksville. The Flight 93 Memorial honors the 40 crew members and non-terrorist passengers who died on that flight, and recalls the sense of national unity Americans felt in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. There are reports that the entrance gates to the memorial have been locked since the shutdown began on October 1. WPXI-TV of Pittsburgh, Penn. reported that visitors were crossing the closed gates as early as October 2, only to be stopped from walking to the memorial by park police.
