BETTER THAN THE MASTER? - And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20) What did you think Jesus promised you when he called you to follow him? A nice home, a great career, a lifetime of financial security? Why do you think you deserve better than the Master? He left the splendor of heaven to be homeless on earth. He who created all things and is sovereign over all kingdoms found money to pay his taxes in the mouth of a fish. He was despised, rejected, abandoned and unjustly executed. Jesus never promised that a life of faith would lead to a life of ease and luxury. The call to follow him is a call to walk in his likeness. He was willing to lay aside the glories of heaven and the comforts of earth in order to fulfill his mission “to seek and save the lost” and “to give his life as a ransom for many.” If you have answered the call to join him in his mission, be prepared to be flexible, available and teachable. He may lead you into unexpected, uncomfortable situations that will test your faith but bring great joy and fruitfulness. A desire to hold firmly to the normal securities of life is not necessarily sinful, but may indicate a lack of trust in the Master and belief in his mission. If he said to you, “Lay down your nets (your house, your job, your career, your time, your hobby) and follow me,” what would you say? Your answer to this question says much about your commitment to discipleship.
