BIOGRAPHY OF LATE SHEHU JA’AFAR ASSADIQ KATSINA The Owner of this name is popularly known within Katsina Metropolis or the name has been spreading all over the Northern part of Nigeria, During his period, his life existed during the leadership of Emir Abubakar, Muhammadu Dikko, Usman Nagogo and he later died during the leadership of Emir Muhammadu Kabir Usman. Shehu Ja’afar the son of Jarrahu, is a great scholar very knowledgable person, he inherited this through his parent because they were also scholars and leaders in Islamic knowledge. Shehu Ja’afar has visited most of the popularly known Northern Islamic Qur’anic schools and he earned the blessing of the schools. He has uncountable number of students and the Muridai (i.e.) followers from every cranny and corner of Nigeria and some of the west African Countries like Niger, Cote d’Ivoire etc. he has traveled in most of west African Countries for Islamic propagation. As mentioned earlier he inherited this through his ascended. Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq, the son of Malam Jarrahu the son of Malam Buhari, who has the in care of (ROGA) son of Damuna, son of Malam Sambo son of Shehu Abubakar Albajangari (i.e.) his tribe and was originated from Banu BAk,Tthe tribe of Bak originally lived in Futa Toro in Mali Republic and he was the leader of the tribe. This tribe of Bajangari were Fulbe , the name of Bajangari originated either from the name of their original area they dwelled or one of their ascendants has this incare, the 5th grand father of Shehu Ja’afar (.i.e.) Abubakar Bajangari was the leader of this tribe member and he was the big scholar among them. The Bajangara tribe migrated from Futa Toro, because of misunderstanding that took place between them and the Emir of Mali at that period to Dogon Dutse in Sokoto area. From Dogon Dutse they also migrated to Sirika in Dutsi Local Government area. Shehu Abubakar died, his elder son Malam Sambo became Khalipha and continue his Islamic teaching and leadership until he later died, before he died he left a will that his grand son Bukhari should inherit him and replace his sit as Khalipha. Khalipha Bukhari is a very knowledgable person and he maintained justice in his leadership, he is also un- materialistic person. He maintained his tenure under this effort until he later passed away, where his son Jarahu succeeded him, Jarrahu was a great heroe in terms of respecting Islamic scholars and paying courtesy visit to scholars because of this reason travelling become his hobby from this town to another paying courtesy visit and seeking blessing from scholars in acquiring more knowledge from them. Shehu was born on Monday 11/Rabi’u Awwal/1325 – 1908 A.D at Kotai Village, he was born from a knowledgeable family. His mother’s name is Sayyida Khadija daughter of Alkali Mani. Alkali Aliyu understood how knowledgeable Jarrahu was maintaining and understanding in Islamic knowledge more especially in terms of Sharia and Ma’arifa and his level in the community, led Alkali Aliyu to marry his daughter to Malam Jarrahu, who became the mother of Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq. Emir of Katsina Abubakar decided to appoint Malam Jarrahu as a judge in Islamic Magistrate Court because of his levels of knowledge and understanding in Islamic Sharia, but he refused to accept the appointment. For this reason he decided to escape from being a judge but he has no way other than to divorce his wife and leave the town He left to Kazaure later he came back to Daura and finally proceed to Sokoto where he finally died there. Shehu’s mother later went back to her father’s house were she mate her brothers and sisters. At the time Shehu attained 5 years old she took him to Malam Ali at Kofar Yamma in order to learn the recitation of Holy Qur’an, based on Hausa Fulani tradition, their children first attained Islamic Qur’anic school before proceeding to another educational level. After some time Malam Ali planed for travel based on the tradition of Hausa Islamic Qur’anic teachers, they don’t setle in one area. Malam Ali was also like them and he traveled together with his students and Shehu inclusive . The travel he did with Shehu, added value towards the development of Shehu’s life and Islamic educational career. After Shehu became expert in recitation of the Holy Qur’an based on warsh school of taught, he continued equipping himself in Islamic knowledge in other aspect a part from Qur’an. He traveled to Rimi and met Malam Goje where he was been taught and comprehend most of the background Islamic knowledge. From there he traveled to Dutsinma were he learned much from Malam Muhammadu Basakwace and later came back to Katsina were he met Malam Salihu Gatarin Baki Darma, and learned from him. Shehu traveled again to Bakori where he learned from Malam Ahmadu Bakori, Shehu read so many books more especially books on Fiqihu based on Malikiya school of taught. In fact Malam Ahmad Bakori was the first biggest scholar Shehu met, and Malam Ahmad Bakori was the person who introduced Shehu and gave him authority to start performing compulsory service that is (WURDI) Tijjaniya. Shehu travelled to Kano where he met Malam Ibrahim Na Madabo who has the in care of Malam Babba from the re-known Islamic school in Kano were he learned some Fiqhu books. Shehu also studied at Zaria from Malam Yahuza bin Sa’ad where he read Nahawu, Fiqhu and Tasauwaf, from him. In the same town he moved to Malam Na’iya where he read Lugga and Fiqhu from him. Consequently Shehu came back to Katsina where he read from Malam Ala that was his last teacher in physical knowledge. After Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq equipped himself in Islamic knowledge he later came back to Katsina where he continue teaching people. Because of his good intention, he has a lot of blessings over the school, people from different ramifications were rushed to earn a blessing. Shehu Ja’afar is a hardworking person, he has decent behaviours, clean mind camarate, friendly to every body, patient, gentle humble and generous. For this reason his Zawiyya differ from others more especially in the issues related to Sharia, Shehu has no excuse. Even though his Zawiyya combined both Sharia and spiritual knowledge. In this text we can’t write the detail history of Shehu especially in the area of:- 1. His travels because Shehu has visited most of the west African Countries. 2. The type of Ulama and Sheikhs he met and something related to this. 3. Number of his students and Muridai within and out side the Country. 4. His position to Shehul-Islam even though there are a lot of text written by Shehul-Islam in relation to this. 5. He met a lot of criticisms, antagony and even hatred from those that were ignorant about it and so continued to date. So it is, with the entire religion of Islam and the Prophet through whom the religion was revealed. There is a saying which says “A person shall be an enemy of what he knows not”. Allah (S.W.T) says in Q 9:32 “They would like to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will not allow, but that his light should be perfected, even though the unbelievers may detest”. As a result of this fortune critism, Shehu received from the people by the time Shehu Ibrahim came to Katsina for the first time in 1950 and introduced his third lecture. Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq laid his complain, concerning criticisms and antagony he was receiving, he wants to permission to migrate from Katsina town to another part within the area of Katsina (1). Then Shehu Ibrahim kept silent he makes steps ahead in side the Shehu’’s house at (Runbun Hatsi Post Office Katsina) before he moved to Garama and then he looked at east, west, south and north and said “Salisatu Buldani Wahiya Kashina Makaru Ja’afar BIhasanah Sanah”. Therefore, Shehu Ja’afar got peace of mind he knew the place where Faila will prevail and spread all over the State and neighbouring State, and Countries. 6. Detailed information about his close friends and their position to him. 7. Number of Zawiyyas which was receiving command under his authority. 8. His view in judging problems based on Islamic rule etc. MEETING BETWEEN SHEHU JA’AFAR ASSADIQ AND SHEHUL-ISLAM Paying courtesy visits by Shehu to other Islamic scholars is a prevailing issue no matter how far their distance are, more especially if he has spiritual expectation of being the person Gausu Zaman. But most of the time they responded to him, one day he travelled to Tasawa and met Malam Sanusi in 1946 expecting him to be the Gausu zaman, but he wasn”t the one. So he sent him to Agadas and met one great scholar he was Shehu Sharif Ahmad based on that spiritual expectation. He also said he was not, but the person having this position his time has come, and if you meet him extend my regards to him. Later Shehu traveled to Kaulah after the prevailing of Shehul-Islam Gausu Zamanm, Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq gave him total submission in 1948 since before he came to Nigeria. By the time Shehul Hadi came to Kano Shehu Ja’afar has already gone to Kaulah and met Shehul-Islam. FEW AMONG THE SUNNA AND MUSTAHABBI WHICH SHEHU REVEALED OVER 60 YEARS HERE IN KATSINA 1. Shehu Ja’afar was the first Sahab and Khalipha of Shehu Ibrahim in Katsina State. 2. He brought the detailed information of revealing the Failt Tijjaniya at Katsina State. 3. He was the first person bearing the title of Shehu in Katsina State. 4. Katsina is the third place where Faila revealed in all Hausa State. 5. He did a lot in trying to make people be aware about issues of Shehu and Faila because of:- - Some of our neighbouring towns like Kano they have a lot of scholars who organized themselves and helped each other on the issues, and they had support from people and government. - While here in Katsina he was the only person and at the beginning he does not have support from all angles. 6. He was the first person who revealed some Sunna like Kabadhu, and Raf’u that is raising hands during Takbir of Sallat Farilla and Sunna. 7. Wearing turban by young men, the more people see you with turban they knew you are from Shehu’s house. 8. Gathering people to Zikiri in a laud voice originated from Shehu Ja’afar’s house herein Katsina. 9. Marriage with only dowry. 10. Gathering people in the night of 12/Rabi’ul Awwal till morning recitation of Holy Qur’an, reading some text and Islamic history all in the name of Maulud, only Shehu started doing this. But here in Katsina some people were reading some texts like Ishiriniya, Ashariyu Wutriya etc. in the night 19/Rabi’u Awwal and the following day in the morning it was call Takutuha. 11. Sallam twice after the completion of prayer it was only Shehu who started performing this in Katsina. 12. Wearing Hijab by female children and girls started from Shehu house. 13. Arrangement of Sahu during Sallah Shehu started this in Katsina. 14. Building the first Islamiyya school in Katsina about 58 years back. 15. Forming syllabus for the children in Islamiyya Shehu was the person who started this in Katsina. 16. Summoned people and tell them what is good or bad every time when the need arises. 17. Establishing the school for married women taught by his wives since 1945 to date. 18. His house is the first Zawiyya for Faila in Katsina similarly it combined both the two physical and spiritual knowledge. 19. Speaking in Arabic language men and women, girls and boys this tradition only started from Shehu’s house. Even though other scholars knew Arabic language but is not always they practiced it. 20. Receiving visitors: Visitors from different places far and near, Malams, Sheikhs, Blacks, Arabs and Sharifai every day the house is always full of visitors or guests. 21. Performing Sallatul Asham reading the holy Quran from the beginning till the end of the Qur’an within the month of Ramadan started in Shehu’s house for over 45 years. 22. Reciting basmala before starting Fatiha in Sallah, Shehu started observing this Sunna in Katsina State. 23. Saying Amin after Fatiha here in Katsina started in Shehu’s house. 24. Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq has many uncountable students both within and outside the Country. Shehu Ja’afar Assadiq committed the whole of his life in Islamic propagation. He died at the age of 84 on Thursday around 6:30am in the month of Shawwal, 13th 1404 AH which is equivalent to 1984. He left 4 married women, 11 sons and 10 daughters alive and many grand sons and daughters. May Allah continue resting his Soul in Perfect Peace. Ameen!!!
