*BLACK HISTORY FACT* Florence Kelley an American activist for civil rights and social reform was born on this date in 1859. In 1892, the Governor of Illinois, John Peter Altgeld appointed Kelley as the states first chief factory inspector at the Hull House, which was a place for social reformers. In 1894, Florence Kelley and her staff managed to persuade the state legislature to pass legislation controlling child labor. This included a law limiting women and children to a maximum eight-hour work day.
