Jackie Robinson, the first Black baseball player in the major leagues, was born in Cairo, GA, on this date in 1919. Lieutenant Commander Samuel Lee Gravely became the first Black person to command a U.S. warship on this date in 1962. Gravely commanded the USS Falgout. Doug Williams, football great, became the first Black to quarterback a Super Bowl team on this date in 1988. Williams led the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII .
