BMI is still quite good at working out risk in the average - TopicsExpress

BMI is still quite good at working out risk in the average person... ...but it isnt flawless. Eg, I am supposed to be 87kg to be BMI 25...which is difficult when a dexa has shown my fat free body mass (0% fat) as 92kg. But because my fat % is too high, I still suffer increased risk of all sorts of problems. The moral of the story is to avoid slavish adherence to anything but to utilize things that have been shown to have some utility in a sensible way. BMI has its issues. For average people, it has been shown to be comparable to other more expensive methods of estimating risk. Telling someone to eat 1000 calories without understanding their lifestyle etc is dumb and I have to question the qualifications of those giving advice :/
