BOPA ANALYSIS - ARMED ROBBERIES IN GABORONE WORRISOME (EDITED) Gaborone, which used to be a haven of peace in the country, is now earning a bad name because of recent spat of armed robberies. The activities of armed robbers might compel many Gaborone dwellers to live in fear. It is not uncommon to get a phone call from a friend or a relative lamenting the armed robbery situation in Gaborone. They snatch bags from people and deprive them of their monies and personal property. Police weekly crime report of July 12 to 16 indicated that there were 690 armed robbery cases reported compared to 947 reported in the same period last year, with cash amounting to over P208 000. But, in the recent past, it appears that some robbers have changed their operations and they targeted big shops such as fast food outlets. First it was the Bus Rank Shell Filling Station in which one robber was killed through an exchange of bullet shootings with members of the police and three managed to escape. After some two weeks, the police arrested five suspects believed to be the ones who robbed the filling station. Second was the Main Mall Nandos in which armed robbers also got away with an unspecified amount of money and no arrest was made in connection with robbery. Thirdly, four robbers attacked KFC G-West, armed with sharp instruments and went away with close to P2000. No arrest was made. And late yesterday (6/8/13), four robbers went to BBS Nandos, one armed with something police suspected to be a pistol with other one using a slash and told employees to lie down before they opened the tills and stole close to P3 000. They also stole P400 from a customer who was still waiting for service. In all these incidences, a corolla vehicle was mentioned more than three times. In some cases it, would be seen with registration numbers of a motorbike whilst in other occasions, it was inserted with foreign number plates. The incidents have got many people asking questions , as well as raising fears. For his part Broahurst Police station commander, Superintendent Molapisi, expressed the view that the more the police step up its operations to crack down on these armed robbers, the more the armed robbers changed their mode of operations. He appealed to the residents of Gaborone and the business community to be vigilant and expose armed robbers and miscreants to make the work of the police successful.
