BRAVE ASSOCIATES CHEATED AS DIXON HELPS TO GET THE LEAGUE LEADERS ON THE RUN!! Lewes Associates FC welcomed table topping Physics Athletico to Stanley Turner in an attempt to avenge the 5-0 hammering earlier this year. Unfortunately, the league failed to send a ref and so manager John Stone stepped in to officiate. LA lined up with Wesley Mills in goal, Keeley Howell, Graham Webb, Connor Martin and Andy Charlton across the back. In midfield we had Perri Lacey, Craig Dixon, captain Paul Harley and Chris Leaney on the left. Up top the unchanged pairing of Akkers Hattab and Paul Corlett hunted for goals. Associates started well with early pressure being applied in central midfield by the hungry Dixon. He snapped into a challenge and played Harley in on the edge of the box, the captain slipped Corlett through only to be caught on the boggy pitch. Dixon again won a 50/50 before playing left to Leaney who cut in and thumped a long range effort right of the goal. Charlton was dealing calmly with the Athletico right winger in awful muddy conditions on the left wing. As always his distribution was perfect, never giving his passes away. LA pushed forward and created good possession, Harley rained his long throws into the box with Lacey, Leaney and Corlett causing problems for the Athletico defence. Leaney had a free kick that was headed clear with Hattab, Webb and Martin bombing in to net. Then a great bit of quick feet from Dixon, in awful conditions, before he flighted a perfect ball towards Hattab at the edge of the area. Hattab climbed high, leaning into the centre half, causing the Athletico player to head past his own keeper. 1-0. At the other end Webb tried to get to grips with having yet another partner in central defence with him. A long ball caught the Associates side cold but the bullish Mills raced from his line to smother the striker at his feet. Harley was getting his sights in with a couple of fierce long range efforts before another ball over the LA back line left their striker unmarked to net. 1-1. Associates still battled on through the awful muddy conditions and Dixon got forward from midfield to play Corlett in, he calmly dinked the ball past the on rushing keeper to send LA 2-1 up. At half time manager Stone, who had reffed the first half perfectly with honesty, let the Athletico manager take over the duties for the second half. Immediately, problems began for Associates. Howell had an uncharachteristic rush of blood to the head and threw the ball inside to an Athletico player who finished well past the outstanding Mills. 2-2 Then, not long after, Howell headed off the line from an Athletico corner with a goal being certain. Ten minutes later he could do nothing as the number 10 fowled Martin in the build up as they shot high past Mills. The LA players surrounded the ref, but he wasnt budging. His side were now leading for the first time. The boys drove on, refusing to let heads go down and Corlett found Hattab who turned well in the box to fire inches wide of the top corner. Harley again benefited from Dixon winning balls in the air and side stepped before hammering in a strong shot that the keeper did well to hold. Charlton stretched his legs down the left, by passing Leaney, he fed Harley who did well to skip a challenge but was pulled down. Harley bent the resulting free kick round the wall but the keeper saved again. With Mills like a brick wall at the back and Martin and Webb now solid, (Martin hitting one of the cleanest, and hardest 50/50s Ive seen!) the side pushed on with Lacey getting a second wind and the other attacking players linking well, Dixon again picked the perfect pass, releasing Corlett. He ran shoulder to shoulder with the centre half before netting in the bottom corner with a great shot. Then the Athletico linesman flagged, saying Corlett had been offside. Their manager agreed and it stayed 3-2. A Leaney corner was headed on target by Martin, only for the ball to be cleared off the line. Although this looked over also! The game finished 3-2 although it should have been a draw and could have been a win. We battered them for 90mins! They hated it. They cheated. The only way they could get anything off us. Across the park everyone gave 100%! And nobody gave up on a horrendous pitch, and we played nice football. Better luck next week boys!! Proud to be an Associate this evening, as we didnt need John to cheat for us to batter them!! #COYLAANDPROUD!! MOM:- Andy Charlton, Craig Dixon and Wesley Mills.
