BREAKING NEWS. TODAY. BALI. By Susi Johnston The people of Bali, and the non-Balinese people who live here and love it truly, REJECT RECLAMATION OF BENOA BAY. The issue here is a commercial tourism mega-project of huge proportions that was secretively planned, with deals done behind closed doors, between the Government of the Province of Bali and the main developer TWBI. After more than five years of secret planning, the project was foisted on a shocked and horrified public, as a fait accompli. Well, it is NOT a fait accompli, and if the people of Bali, and the people of the ENTIRE WORLD who wish to protect the global environment for EVERYONE, are heard, it will never be a fait accompli. The mega-project is wildly inappropriate for Bali and particularly for its proposed location. It is planned to include a Disney-like theme park, a Formula I circuit, a race track, an enormous international luxury brand shopping mall, big luxury apartment blocks, condominium complexes, hotels (as if Bali needed more of those, with many of the ones it has now not full enough to pay the bills), entertainment complexes, and possibly one or more Macau-style casinos. The location is one that presently does not exist. There is no land there. It is a big bay, ringed with mangrove forests, fed by several rivers, and which receives (way too much) urban runoff (uncontrolled). It is home to traditional Bugis sailors, fishermens villages, small local water sports enterprises, a very sacred Balinese Hindu temple, a Chinese traditional temple, birds, fish, insects, crustaceans, snakes, lizards, and lots of other creatures. The idea for this behemoth of naked greed is to MAKE LAND by FILLING IN almost the entire bay! Its sheer lunacy. The environmental impact statement TWBI commissioned from Udayana University (top university in Bali) showed that such a project was unfeasible. It would cause chronic flooding in the low-lying areas around the bay, which include . . . THE AIRPORT RUNWAYS AND THE AIRPORT . . . THE MAIN PUBLIC GARBAGE DUMP FOR THE ENTIRE ISLAND . . . Sanur, South Denpasar, Kuta, Tuban, Benoa . . . nice . . . flood your competition. Really fair and fine business practices. So . . . PLEASE help us all to TOLAK REKLAMASI TELUK BENOA. Please.
