It is one of the most interesting provinces in the North, serving as a center for commerce, transportation and communication. It is situated on the geographical and administrational line that divides the Central region from the Northern region. Phitsanulok is the birthplace of King Naresuan the Great and his equally brave and able brother, Prince Ekatosarot. At the cross-road between the Northern and Central regions of the country, Phitsanulok has long been an important center both for political and strategical reason. It was a recruiting place when Ayutthaya had war with Myanmar. It was a capital of Thailand for 25 years during the reign of King Boromtrailokkanat of Ayutthaya. The climate of Phitsanulok is generally hot and humid. It borders with Uttaradit in the North, Pichit in the South, Loei and Phetchabun in the East, Kamphaeng Phet and Sukhothai in the West. Covering on area of 10,815.8 square kilometers, the province is divided into 9 parts/regions: Amphoes Muang, Bang Krathum, Bang Rakam, Chat Trakan, Nakhon Thai, Noen Maprang, Phrom Priram, Wang Thong and Wat Bot. Phitsanulok, the provincial capital of ther lower north, is rich in historic sites. In the old days people called Phitasnulok Muang Song Kwae. The town of the two rivers, due to the fact that there are two rivers running through the town. Mae Nam Nan, the Nan River, flows past the heart of the town. On on of its banks is an ancient temple from the Sukhothai period, Wat Phra Sri Ratana Mahathat Wora Vihara, which houses a splendid large bronze Buddha Image, Phra Buddhajinarach. The statue, cast in the Sukhothai style, is revered throughout Thailand and is known as the most gracious Buddha image in the world. Every year in February people from all over the country join a major religious celebration here at this important temple. Another event that attracts thousands of visitors to Phitsanulok is the annual Boat Race which takes place on the Nan River in Mid-September Naresuan University Naresuan university owes its beginning to what was initially the Higher Teacher Training School which in turn became a “part” of the College of Education of Prasarnmitr in 1953, brought about because of the urgent need to produce degree-level training for the teaching profession. In 1974, the College of Education of Prasarnmitr and the other 8 campuses became public universities by the Royal Decree of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej who graciously named the new universities Srinakharinwirot University, Phitsanulok was therefore an independent university in the lower northern part of Thailand. In 1982, a group of people including government employees, soldiers, policemen, shopkeepers, local people and representatives cooperated to propose a bill before parliament for establishing Naresuan University. The team who worked for the university was called “a committee of establishing Naresuan University” and included an ex-governor, Mr. Seub Rodprasert who acted as the head of the committee-but after the moved to work in Chonburi province Lieutenant General Siri Thiwaphant, Third Army Region Commander, became the head of the committee (he is a senator for Phitsanulok). It took a long time to bring about because of changes of government and dissolution of the government. Initially the bill to establish Naresuan University failed but was brought back again for reconsideration. Finally with a lot of effort it was successful in the government of Gerneral Chatchai Choonhawan. At this 4 new universities were established which were Naresuan University (from Srinakharinwirot University,Phitsanulok), Burapha University (from Srinakharinwirot University, Bangsan, Chonburi), Ubonratchathani University and Suranaree University of Technology which is currently the first autonomous university of Thailand. Naresuan University was listed in the Government Gazette in July 29, 1990. Thus, July 29, 1990, which is also the 400th anniversary of the region of King Naresuan University the Great, was held as the Establishment Day of Naresuan University. This date is not only a wonderful remembrance day but also an auspicious occasion for the university staff and people in Phitsanulok
