Back from my road trip,or thats what Ill call it for now. Nothing more gratifying for me than to see my little Gina making more strides forward. They both (her & Fredo) slept side by side in my room last night, a first, and with no problems. She got up and walked with us, and she actually initiated the play between her and Fredo, (another first), she seems to be a considerably more stable in her mood, responded to commands pretty well, and was playful with me when Fredo got tired of running around with her. She was enjoying a beautiful spring Sunday morning, and acting like a nearly normal dog. Shes still a bit touchy about being handled, although she will allow short amounts, and occasionally seeks the attention and wants the affection. She gave unsolicited kisses, and her only really rough spot is that her resource guarding (food aggression) has not yet been brought under any sort of control. With her, its been a matter of small steps, and NO MEDICINES OF ANY KIND. Kind and compassionate, but firm and structured care have began to restore her trust in humans again, although she has bad days like we all do. But it warmed my heart to see this poor, very abused little girl, who was recommended for destruction even by her behaviorist and several vets, start to have a happy life, and although her social development has been delayed, she does well at the dog park with other dogs, seeks out attention from other people, and although I dont mean to imply that shes a completed project, shes progressed very well. I attribute her progress in no small part to my well trained little guy, Fredo, who seems to be able to teach her what ever I cant. I tried everybody elses advice and methods, and was thankful for the advice. Ultimately found that patience, love, compassion, structure, proper diet & exercise were what she needed. No pills, no aversive stimulus training, no other baloney. Just love her, treater her kindly, be patient, go as slowly as you have to, and she has eventually come around to the point where most of her time is happy, and she is well cared for.
