Bare Bones RM Report - It was the best of times, it was the worst - TopicsExpress

Bare Bones RM Report - It was the best of times, it was the worst of times starting with Judy Toivonen following me up the Interstate and 4 miles before our exit her truck caught fire - thankfully shed loaded a brand new fire extinguisher that morning. Then my cell phone decided to leave me hanging - unable to check for texts or caller ID - the screen on my flip phone (dont say it............) was white. Then we had some minor trail sabotage and lastly in taking out a 275 gallon tote full of water in the back of my truck, the load shifted up towards the cab smashing 3 of my plastic water barrels. Best times seemed to make up for all that with a slight rain the morning of the ride, cloud cover for part of the morning, never ran out of water on the trail, views from the upper elevations to die for, and then at the finish some memorable moments: David LeBlanc and Laser completed their 4000th mile and Laser at 21 years old. Kellie Jacobson completed her first 50 miler, Fred Hanson rode his 23 year old to a safe back of the pack 50 miler, Arthur Winn ( Cherlyn Spahan) completed his first ride (Ive received a few texts on Arthurs physical condition and his understanding of the words truck disease since his completion) and my favorite duo on the trail - the epitome of how I want to remember our sport. Julia Sayer was riding as an emancipated senior and was in 1st place on the 30 miler, Ben Volk was just behind her - his horse having to canter to keep up with Julias horses 14 mile an hour trot. Bens horse did an endo and broken tack went everywhere, his bit landing in a tree. He managed to keep a hold of his horse with what I imagine is his R/T rope, and hollering for help - Julia came back to help Ben and they came into the finish together. In pulsing - both horses were down crossing the line - but Bens # was called out first. Later Ben came to me and asked me to put Julia first as she went back to get him and stayed in front bringing him and his horse in safely. Sporstmanship at its best by both riders!
