“Barrister Duncan Graham SC says the initial ruling—that a doctor could be found responsible for a patient’s obesity—was ridiculed in media. “That’s the way it was portrayed on the media, this is about a fat guy who’s fed his face, and he’s only got himself to blame for his liver cancer,” he said. “And that is wrong. Obesity is a serious multi-system disease that can produce life-threatening problems such as liver disease which may go on to liver cancer. “It needs to be treated seriously, not just by saying, ‘lose weight’.” Commentary: Many people in the Australian community still have this fantasy idea that doctors are trained in nutrition. This case clearly illustrates that medical doctors are NOT trained in nutrition. To give a patient, a vague piece of advice to ‘lose weight’ is simply not good enough, in cases of obese patients with advanced liver disease. There needs to be an appropriate science-based dietary protocol to treat cases like these.
