Because its not individual humans who have succumbed to a mystery virus that leaves them rotting but upright—its institutions. Its state agencies. Its police departments. Federal departments. Its whole nations. Were living in the sagging shadows of institutional zombies, of twitching, mindless shells that still carry some resemblance to the thing they used to be. Theyre... representational. Metaphorical. Propped up by memories and animated by platitudes. Only theyre dead. Or worse than dead.
