Beef and Broccoli By Laura on September 19, 2013 in beef, Chinese, gluten free I love Chinese food but my husband does not. I have however found, that he is more likely to try a dish I make. I have made several Asian style dishes and almost all have been something my husband has enjoyed. If he didn’t like it, I could usually tweak it to get it to where he liked it. Todays recipe is one that we had at a get together with friends that my husband wasn’t thrilled to go to. He wasn’t thrilled because he knew they were going to serve Chinese food. When the food was placed before him that evening he wanted to be nice and try it. He tried it and LOVED it. I knew that if my husband LOVED this dish I had to get the recipe. Now, one thing you must understand is if you want to make oriental dishes at home you have to buy things from the store that you might not normally buy. However, all of these ingredients can be found in a regular grocery store in the oriental section. You can save money on the ingredients if you do go to an Asian market but it isn’t necessary. Beef and Broccoli This one needs planning to allow time to marinate. Ingredients 1 lb. flank steak sliced thinly against the grain Marinade: 1 tsp sugar ⅛ tsp baking soda 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp Mirin (sweet cooking rice seasoning) 1 Tbsp sesame oil 1 tsp cornstarch 1 egg, beaten Sauce: 1 tsp ginger ½ tsp garlic, minced garlic 1 lb bag of frozen steam-able broccoli 2 Tbsp oyster sauce 2 Tbsp water 1 tsp cornstarch 1 tsp sugar hot cooked rice Instructions In a bowl, combine all of the marinade. Add beef and toss to coat. Cover and place in the fridge. Allow to marinate for 8 hours. Heat wok or large skillet, add a little oil to prevent to meat from cooking. Add marinated meat to the skillet along with the 1 tsp ginger and minced garlic. Stir-fry until beef is done. This should only take a few minutes. In the meantime, steam broccoli according to package directions in the microwave. Drain. Add broccoli to the wok along with the oyster sauce. Combine water and cornstarch and add to the wok along with 1 tsp sugar. Cook until all the meat and broccoli is well coated and mixture thicks slightly. Serve over hot cooked rice. Serves 4-5. Notes Recipe should be gluten free if you use gluten free soy sauce. Recipe adapted from a recipe given to me by a friend.
