Been having a lot of fun reading friends facts about themselves, - TopicsExpress

Been having a lot of fun reading friends facts about themselves, especially the friends that I have met over the past year who are spread out around the world. John Thornburgh gave me the number 6 for Facts About Yourself this past Friday (pardon the delay). If you want me to give you a number, let me know in the comment section below. Here goes: 1. I was born in New Delhi, India, and was on my first flight when I was six weeks old, from India to the US (parents were already working and settled in the states, but I happened to be born in India; talk about a long flight to be on with/as an infant!). I lived in New Jersey for 5 years, then moved to Irvington, New York, 45 minutes north of New York City; Irvington is a small town along the Hudson River, a great place to grow up, and was named after Washington Irving, the person who wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Sleepy Hollow is one of the neighboring towns) in the 19th century. After high school, I went to college in Boston, then lived and worked in New York City for 3 years, moved back to Boston for two years, moved from the Northeast to the West Coast to Los Angeles for 2 years of business school (with a 4 month stint in Paris, France, on exchange in Fall 2011), and have been living in San Jose, California, an hour south of San Francisco, for the past year and five months. 2. I talk to my parents everyday and have done so since I left home 12 and a half years ago. I am very close with my sister as well. Although they are all in New York and 2900 miles away, I go back and visit 4-5 times a year. 3. I tend to be pretty passionate about the things that I like, and those interests do not go away with time; new interests get added (like traveling), but youll never hear me say I was really into that activity for a year but now dont like it. For example, even though Im 30 and am 8 and a half years out of college, I still visit my fraternity at MIT several times a year to meet the new brothers (they were born in the 90s!), see the alums, and go to the old hangout spots; I have the same energy and enthusiasm for the fraternity as I did when I was 18 and first joined. 4. Having been exposed to Eastern and Western cultures, I pick and choose the aspects of each that work for me. From the East, I like the spirituality and self-reflection (I meditate everyday and silently chant Sanskrit prayers, and feel that keeps me centered and allows me to understand and control the thoughts and feelings that are in me). From the West, I like the openness and the need to challenge the status quo in order to make things better. Ive been fortunate to meet people from all over the world, and I look forward to continuing to learn new things from you all! 5. In my free time, I tend to do a little of many things, rather than doing a lot of a few things. My interests include spending time with family and friends, meeting new people, running and hiking, dancing (though I have not done that in a while), singing (I sing with the Cisco Singers at work), drumming, going to museums, and listening to music/attending concerts (Ive done a lot of that lately haha). 6. I love music, in particular heavy metal, which is far more diverse and wide-ranging than most people think. However, I did not know what heavy metal was until I was 14. Prior to that, I grew up with Western Classical music and Indian Classical music. My maternal grandpa loved Western Classical music, and would always bring records or videos of live footage from different concerts, specifically showcasing Mozart, and we would blast the music haha. My paternal grandma, who lived with us for many years, used to play violin and loved Indian Classical Music. She played this music a lot and took me to many concerts; in particular, I really liked the Mridangam, which is a type of Indian drum that is played with ones fingers, and looking back it sounded so metal :). Fast forward to when I was 14. At the suggestion of a friend, I bought (rather, my parents bought me) Master of Puppets by Metallica, and I remember reading the X-Men Dark Phoenix saga when I put the CD on for the first time. From the opening until the end, it blew me away and the rest is history :). Over the past year, Ive met a lot of great people in this community, and its becoming a great tradition to reunite at least once a year at a festival (whether its Progpower USA in Atlanta or Metal Female Voices Festival in Belgium). I could have never imagined that this music would be so worldwide and connect so many people. Truly a terrific time to be a fan of this music!
