Before the release of this album, OMD were pop powerhouses. All of their singles up to this point were very successful and they had a huge following in Canada and Europe. Then they released Dazzle Ships, a dark, experimental album featuring sound collages of shortwave radio broadcasts, songs about international politics and genetic engineering. Apparently it was a massive failure, and every album released by them after this was extremely accessible and inoffensive compared to this brilliant masterpiece.
